A 15 Day Juice Fast

15 Day Juice Fast: Day 2

Day 2 was much harder than Day 1. A good sign of full detox mode is a coated tongue, which is pretty gross, but signals that your body is starting to release toxins. I was sluggish for most of the day, and my skin started to smell funny. I had a headache in the afternoon, and finally, around 8pm, I had this huge burst of energy and mental clarity and that lasted until 11pm, when I went to bed. It was wonderful. I have all these different goals I am praying about, and suddenly I was able to just see what I need to do next. It is so easy to get distracted from our purposes in this noisy world. Sometimes it is so beneficial to turn down the volume on something as regular and basic as food, in order to allow our hearts to align with what God has spoken to us, or to press through and hear what we need to hear from Him.

I had 3 juices, made of different combinations of these veggies/fruits:

Large organic carrots
Large organic red beets
Lemons, peeled
Organic sprouts
Organic ginger gold apples
Organic tomatoes

Everything was freshly squeezed, except for the tomato juice, which I bought in the health food section of the grocery store. I always find, that on Day 2 or 3, I crave salt like crazy. So I will have some vegetable broth on those days, in the afternoon, and then at night before bed, I’ll have tomato juice.

I also drank 2 1/2 quarts of filtered water and had 1 mug of heated veggie broth. And I had a cup of detox tea, which I can take a picture of and put on one the next posts.

In the evening, for a couple of hours before I got my good energy, I was struggling with wanting to chew something. This is another one of the ways in which your body is trying to get you to eat something – the irresistible urge to chew something, anything. I resisted and had a cup of herbal tea. I had the normal hunger pangs that I experience the first few days of a fast, but they don’t bother me as much as they used to, because I have seen the benefit of letting my digestive system go to sleep for small and long lengths of time and letting my body use that newly freed up energy (that it usually spends on breaking down and processing foods) to address issues, heal, and get rid of toxins.

Some people do not like the hunger pangs and chew urges at all, and find that it distracts them so much that it affects their ability to fast. So they will do an enema to hurry up the process and free up that energy. An enema, while fasting, basically just empties the bowels in order to signal to the digestive system that it is okay to rest.

Either way, once your hunger pangs go away and your stomach gets quiet, you know that is what has happened. Usually, this is when the incredible energy comes, and your body and mind and spirit are able to spend good time being refreshed and rejuvenated.

I have done so many small juice fasts. This is a longer one, and the longest I’ve ever done was 30 days, simply because I felt that my body was in crisis and if I didn’t do something about it, I was going to end up prescription drugs. You can read about that fast here.

This is 15 day fast, and I felt that was a good length, since I have not done any in the last year and a half, and I wanted to give my body the time and space that I feel it needs. If you are just starting out with juicing, I would recommend first incorporating fresh juice into your diet a few times a week, in addition to eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, then daily, and then try replacing a meal, and then maybe try a 1 day fast. The first 1 day fast I did was very difficult, simply because it is a whole new way of addressing physical issues, and I, like you (probably) have grown up in a medically impatient culture, where popping pills for headaches and heartaches is more valued than taking the time to find the source of the problem, being patient for real healing to occur, and allowing our bodies the rest that they need. It was like a whole new education to begin learning about juicing, whole foods, natural remedies, herbs and fasting.

My skin was still itchy all day. I noticed that the whites of my eyes were brighter when I woke up in the morning. I brushed my teeth half a dozen times throughout the day because the coated tongue thing was getting to me.
