15 Day Juice Fast: Day 15

I’m finished! Boy, it feels good to type that.

Yesterday was the last day of my 15 day juice fast detox. I am sipping a smoothie as I write this. It has 1 cup of berries, 1 banana, and 1 cup of coconut milk in it. Delicious!

This was a great detox. I experienced a normal and moderate amount of detox symptoms, which you can read about in the other journal posts, and I had a couple of days when I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to continue, but once I got that figured out, it was restful, cleansing, quiet, invigorating, and euphoric. I highly recommend using fresh organic juice, of vegetables and fruits, to help you accomplish some of your health and healing goals.

My sleep was wonderful these last two weeks. I recall laying awake for a couple of hours in one night and sleeping deeply the rest. For me, that is big. I have struggled with insomnia for a long time. I am hoping the good sleep will stick around for a while, as I continue to pursue a healthy diet and plenty of exercise.

It feels good to have done this detox at a time when it felt like the changing of a season in my life. I believe it is important to stop and take inventory sometimes. So much of life is a whizzing blur. Why not step off that train from time to time, sit down, and look around at the landscape?

During this time I was also able to kick my caffeine habit to the curb, temporarily. I will be drinking coffee again, although not at full strength. I spent much of the summer weaning myself down to 25% caffeination in my morning coffee, before doing this detox, and that seemed like the perfect amount of caffeine for me. In my coffee maker or French press, it is 3 tbsp of decaf to 1 tbsp of caff, and about 25 oz. of water.

Throughout this fast my daily intake looked like this:

2-4 fresh juices comprised of (mostly) organic vegetables and fruits such as:

Carrots
Broccoli
Kale
Apples
Ginger
Oranges
Lemons
Cucumbers
Celery
Collards
Beets
Tomatoes
Etc.

3-4 quarts of fresh, filtered water

Occasional mugs of organic vegetable broth, for the salt content and savory flavor

Herbal tea

Detox tea

Occasional tbsp. of coconut oil

If you are thinking of doing a juice fast, I recommend reading a book about it first. I’ve recommended some that I’ve read here.

The benefits of this detox for me are:

Renewed sense of clarity and purpose

Lost 13 lbs, which will help my distance running and my knees

Refreshing sleep

Feeling of strength and accomplishment

Good energy

Feelings of rest and refreshment

Clear, glowing skin

Freshly inspired ability to be self- controlled about the food I put in my mouth, since I haven’t put any in my mouth for a long time. Perspective!

Thank you for coming along with me on this 15 day journey. On Days 8 & 9, when it was ridiculously hard, the thought of you was what me going.

I pray that you will have the grace and will to follow the dreams in your heart, and the energy and health to live fully this beautiful, God-given life.
